Sittwe is located on the west coast of Myanmar. It has a rich history and is known for being the birthplace of several important political monks. The 181,000 inhabitants are mostly the Rakhine people, who speak Arakanese (which is closely related and mutually intelligible with Burmese) and are largely Buddhist. Attractions include the Viewpoint, where one can watch the waves in the Indian Ocean and enjoy the scenery; the hundred-year old Shwezedi Monastery, which is the monastery of the first political monk in Myanmar; Ahkyaib-daw, a beloved Buddhist pagoda dating back from the 3rd century BC; and the Rakhine State Cultural Museum, which will allow you to learn plenty about the Rakhine people.
