Louisville was settled on the banks of the Ohio River in 1778, and from 1820 it grew rapidly as a major river port. This city is famous for its thoroughbred racing heritage, and excursions visit Churchill Downs (the site of the Kentucky Derby) and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Old Louisville, with its splendid examples of Victorian, Gothic, Italianate and Beaux Arts architecture, is another worthwhile destination.
