In 1893, Captain Richard With established a steamship service linking northern and southern Norway. Traveling along the country’s coast, ships sailed from Bergen to Kirkenes, an important connection he called "Hurtigruten," meaning "the fast route."
Today, Hurtigruten still travels this route between Bergen and Kirkenes. Sailings are available year-round, including the popular Northern Lights season from late-September through March.
Hurtigruten also offers special Signature Voyages as part of its cruising program. These elevated journeys include all meals and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) on the ship, plus an enhanced onboard activities program led by a Coastal Experience Team. Choose between Svalbard Line and North Cape Line itineraries, for example, and enjoy more in-depth exploration in a selection of Norwegian ports.
Hurtigruten previously offered expedition cruises to destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galapagos, but these sailings are now operated by a separate line called HX. To see itineraries and prices for expedition cruises with HX, click here.
