Capraia is characterized by a rough and wild landscape, as yet untouched by man. A tall ridge creates two distinct halves of the island: the western side is pure rock, abounding in caves and ravines, while the eastern half of the island has rolling hills, valleys and coves. From the village paths wind into the wild beyond where one can explore "little fountains" of spring water, a ravine with a view of the sea and a lake formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. Or sail around the coast to view ancient watch towers, islets and craters made of fire-red rock.
