Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, Arenal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, allowing visitors to the Arenal Volcano National Park to see glowing lava flows, ash clouds and explosions on a regular basis. The nearby town of the same name is to the northeast of Lake Arenal, an artificial lake created as part of Costa Rica's largest hydroelectricity project. While Arenal Volcano gives visitors a spectacular show, especially at night, its dormant neighbor, Chato, which hasn't erupted in over 3500 years, has developed a freshwater lagoon in its caldera. Both volcanoes are located within the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area, a zone of wildlife refuges and national parks, of which Arenal Volcano and its frequent rumblings are the main attraction.
