Stanley Island forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and was itself declared a national park in 1939. Spectacular rock art can be seen on such formations as the imposing Yintayin rock shelter. The painted sandstone depicts different types of ship from foreign nations, hinting that the island has drawn visitors for a long time.
