Qingdao is a Mandarin phrase that means "green island," and the small town at the tip of a slender peninsula was little more than that when German military forces landed there in the beginning of the 20th century. The town appears as though it has been magically lifted from Bavaria and set down along the China Sea. The German Concession, not far from the port, is a dazzling display of European architecture. The old district surrounds Guanxiang Hill and Fulong Hill just near the city center. The Tsing Tao Brewery produces an excellent lager that is exported worldwide. Number One beach is the most developed beach in Qingdao, but on nice days it can be somewhat crowded, so Number Two beach becomes more attractive.
