Manihiki, Cook Islands, New Zealand
Known as the “Island Of Pearls,” Manihiki is held to be one of the most beautiful places in the Cook Islands. The island sits on top of an underwater mountain that reaches 4000 meters from the ocean floor, and houses a beautiful lagoon in the middle of the atoll. The islets that make up the atoll are strung together with a stunning reef that is excellent for swimmers and divers looking for the colorful tropical fish and corals. In addition to the marine life, there are two villages, Tauhuna and Tukao, and various tribes found on the atoll as well. These villages are known for cultivating and harvesting the renowned black pearl. Travelers can tour pearl farms and witness demonstrations of oyster pearl seeding and gathering. While the native language is Rakahanga-Manihiki, English is also spoken in Manihiki.
