Longview, WA

This is the port of call for Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, where visitors can see how the 1980 eruption dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. Slowly, plant and animal life is returning to the 150 square miles of forest that was left barren in the blast. Excursions to an observatory and interpretive center allow visitors to look into the steaming crater of the still-active volcano.
