A fishing center and busy shipping port on Chile's west coast, Iquique is the largest duty-free zone in South America and is affectionately called "Zofri," or free zone, by visitors who come here for exceptional deals. The city boasts a unique geography, with close proximity to the desert, the sea, an oasis and a high plateau. Tour the hot springs and Incan ruins at nearby Mamina and the folklore-rich village of La Tirana, or visit Pica Oasis in the middle of the desert. Iquique also has a casino and active nightlife scene. One of the stages of the International Surf Championship takes place here every January.
