The Chirpoy Islands are all that is left of a partially submerged volcanic caldera, located just north of Japan in the Kuril Island chain. Separated by the Snou Strait, the two uninhabited islands form the perfect spot for a steller sea lion rookery, devised to protect the endangered animal.
